Medals earned by a soldier who died 62 years ago in the line of duty were to be presented to his family today by Republican
Congressman Shelley Moore Capito.
"He earned these medals in battle, and it's a great legacy for his family to have them," Capito said.
Her office was contacted about the late Sgt. Herbert Mucklow in a plea for assistance in helping with the effort to honor his service to
his country.
For World War II veterans, collecting information is challenging because many records from that period were destroyed in a fire in the
1960s, Capito said. However, teamwork made collecting records successful in this case.
A ceremony was set for 4:30 p.m. today at Memorial Wall located at Nitro Children's Park on 19th Street. Capito was to present the
medals to Mucklow's sister, Sarah Hanna.
"She (first) contacted the VFW in Nitro, and they tried to help her get these medals," Capito said.
"They contacted our office. With the records she had from the Department of Veterans, we were able to reconstruct his service and
award the medals he never received."
Mucklow, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was killed in action in France on Sept. 24, 1944. A native of Nicholas
County, he served as an Army infantryman.
His company came under mortar fire about one mile north of Mosseux, France, and Mucklow died in the ensuing battle.
Awards to be presented to his sister in his honor today include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal,
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge First Award, and the
Honorable Service Lapel Button.
"I think, obviously, Sgt. Mucklow made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II," Capito said.
"His sister still has a hole in her heart for the sacrifice her brother made. It is due and proper to present these medals. He earned
them in battle."
