From 1917 until Yesterday . . .
The City of Nitro is a World War I boom town, built by
the United States Government to manufacture gun  
powder for the war.

At an elevation of 590 feet, Nitro is located along the
Kanawha River, just off I-64 about 12 miles west of  
Charleston, West Virginia.

Per the 2010 census, the population was 7,178
within the city limits of 4.28 square miles ...
